January 16, 2017
The opening ceremony of the Myanmar Elephant Conservation Action Plan – the MECAP Review Workshop – was held at Grand Amara Hotel yesterday morning in Nay Pyi Taw.

The opening ceremony of the MECAP Review Workshop was jointly organised by the Forestry Department under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation (MNREC) and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS).
Union Minister U Ohn Win delivered the opening speech at the ceremony, during which he noted the main enemy of wild elephants.
“We mostly found illegal hunting of wild elephants, the conflicts between human and elephants in Ayeyawady, Yangon and Bago Regions,” the minister said. “We have being co-operating with the Union Ministries concerned to handle the conflicts.”
Officials discussed the preservation of the pasturelands of Myanmar wild elephants and of pet elephants as well as protection of the elephants against being killed. Part of the meeting involved submitting to the government a draft of the Myanmar Elephant Conservation Action Plan by Mr. Simon Hedges from the Wildlife Conservation Society, who also discussed the International Elephant Conservation Projects. The workshop will be held through 18 January, it is learnt.
