The opening ceremony of
the Myanmar Elephant Conservation Action Plan – the MECAP Review Workshop – was
held at Grand Amara Hotel yesterday morning in Nay Pyi Taw.
The opening ceremony of
the MECAP Review Workshop was jointly organised by the Forestry Department
under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation (MNREC)
and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS).
Union Minister U Ohn
Win delivered the opening speech at the ceremony, during which he noted the
main enemy of wild elephants.
“We mostly found
illegal hunting of wild elephants, the conflicts between human and elephants in
Ayeyawady, Yangon and Bago Regions,” the minister said. “We have being
co-operating with the Union Ministries concerned to handle the conflicts.”
Officials discussed the
preservation of the pasturelands of Myanmar wild elephants and of pet elephants
as well as protection of the elephants against being killed. Part of the
meeting involved submitting to the government a draft of the Myanmar Elephant
Conservation Action Plan by Mr. Simon Hedges from the Wildlife Conservation
Society, who also discussed the International Elephant Conservation Projects.
The workshop will be held through 18 January, it is learnt.
